Despite my dad hating cars and lacking a licence, he for some reason (storage) decided to buy a house with a garage and a parking space (only person around here to actually own his parking space). Anyway today I got reminder that it exists when I went looking for pictures of 1950s Brussels trams (he’s old, loves the Continent and is fond of all things French(ish)) and that its quite big (for the UK) at 5.5 metres length vs 2.4 metres wide. Kind of a shame it will never have a car in it because:

I should really pay someone to clean it out.

How many people actually use garages to store their cars anyway? New houses very rarely have them (unless you’re an American apparently) and any that do exist are either full of junk or converted to living space.

My neighbours across the road converted their garage bays into a new bedroom which cause an almighty shit storm as they claimed that the road perpendicular to their bays was now their private parking spots and nobody can use them. Now this was bollocks because you can’t just claim the road (unless you bought the land like my family did) but they were so adamant they were in the right, they got two cars towed away.

I’ve always had this dream of building a house with a normal double garage door, but where it opens into a shop with high ceilings and a nice wide open space. It would look normal from the street, but would have room for a handful of projects (with a lift). It can’t be that hard, right?

Nope. Just add money and it can all be yours!

I say that to clients pretty frequently - “anything is possible if you’ve got a big enough bank account.”

My house is nothing special, 3 beds, 2 baths, and it has a 2 car garage.

My parents built their house so that the garage is on the left end and it is the same height and width as the rest of their house. It is three stories tall so they have storage above everything and lifts in the first three bays. It is way larger than they would even need but when they go to sell their house people will like being able to store their RV in their garage, storage, etc.

Can you even open a car door in there when it is clean?

As long as the car isn’t wider than 70 inches and you park to one side but even then it’s a squeeze. If one day I do clear it out and decide to use it as a car port then I’m best getting a convertible and just climbing out.
